Determined to Achieve His Work Goals

Derrick Sturgill was referred to Goodwill Industries through Berkeley Citizens, a provider of support and services to individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs in Berkeley County.

Derrick came to work for Goodwill in November of 2002 a shy young man, not sure what was expected of him, but determined to achieve his work goals. His family did not own a car; therefore Derrick had to rely on his own transportation, a bicycle, to take him to and from work. As a participant in Berkeley Citizens School to Work Program, Derrick attended school in the afternoons and worked the morning shift, from 4:00 am to 12:00 pm, in the Dish Room at the Galley. In June of 2003, Derrick received his high school diploma.

The Goodwill team helped Derrick learn his daily tasks by providing one-on-one training. Derrick learned quickly and soon required less and less supervision. “He was not afraid to ask questions when he did not understand a task and this helped Derrick gain job knowledge and a comfortable familiarity with his surroundings,” states Darlene Smith, Workforce Specialist. It wasn’t long before Derrick was ready to move up and was placed into a new position. His new assignment was in the Pots and Pans Room, one of the busiest areas in the Galley. Here, he has learned to work well under the pressure of time constraints.

Through his work at Goodwill’s Food Service contract, Derrick has acquired independence and no longer needs supported Employment Services. He has learned that strong work ethics earn him a paycheck and the ability to take financial responsibility for his own welfare. “Derrick is no longer shy”, says Smith, “and is extremely respectful of his co-workers and supervisors.” His team leaders and Workforce Specialist Case Manager applaud Derrick’s accomplishments.

Derrick Sturgill was awarded the James R. Bohnenstiehl Achiever of the Year award for 2004 because of his excellent work performance and many accomplishments.
