Determined to Get His Life Back on Track
Frederick Miller came to Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina as a participant in the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP). Frederick, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was honorably discharged from duty in the late ‘60s. After the military, Frederick became a business owner operating several businesses in the Charleston area including an Ice Cream parlor and a Disco Club. Following a tragic accident, Frederick fell upon hard times and soon found himself alone, homeless and without hope.
In November 2003, Frederick found temporary shelter at the Good Neighbor Center and was referred to Goodwill's HVR Program. Determined to get his life back on track and to once again become self-sufficient, Frederick enrolled in Goodwill's Computer Technology classes.
Upon successful completion in March 2004, Frederick began the second phase of his program and was placed into a work experience position at Goodwill's Dorchester Road retail store. Hard work and determination to succeed paid off. At the completion of his 90 day work experience, Frederick was hired full time by Goodwill.
In 2004, Frederick regained his independence, confidence and found a better way of life. He was able to get his driver's license re-instated and purchased his own vehicle. He continues to save his money and hopes to purchase a home of his own soon. Frederick has become an inspiration for others through the power of work!
